Consequences of an air strike on the Gagarin stadium, Chernihiv, March 11
The beginning of the war in Ukraine.
On February 24, 2022, at 6 a.m., Russian President Putin announced the start of a special operation on the territory of Ukraine. The President of Russia referred to the growing military threat from Ukraine with the assistance of NATO, the oppression of the Russian-speaking population of Ukraine and the genocide of the Russian population in the Donbass. He declared that for Russia the presence of such a threat and oppression is unacceptable. "We were left with no other opportunity to protect the integrity of Russia than what we will use today." – said the Russian president. “Our actions are self-defense against the threats that are posed to us and from an even greater catastrophe than what is happening today.”
Putin called on Ukrainian troops to lay down their arms. He warned anyone who wants to intervene in the course of future events about Russia's readiness to retaliate. The answer will be immediate, and the consequences are such that no one has encountered - so said the President of the Russian Federation.
From that moment, Russian troops crossed the borders of Ukraine and, with the support of the troops of the unrecognized republics of Donbass, began military operations to “liberate” the Ukrainian people.
